For 20 years, The Buzz Book has helped readers discover the best of local life.

This spring, the beloved lifestyle guide is celebrating its milestone anniversary with a fresh logo and updated design—a new look that honors the past while looking ahead to the future.

Published four times a year, the pocket-sized magazine shares the best in arts, entertainment, dining, shopping, and community events. Today, 22,000 free copies are available at more than 325 locations, making it easy for readers to pick up a copy and explore what’s happening around them.

The updated design also introduces a modern version of the publication’s familiar bee logo, bringing new energy to a brand readers have trusted for two decades.

A Simple Idea That Took Flight

When founder Chris Alexander launched The Buzz Book in 2006, she noticed something missing in the media.

News headlines were often negative, and many print publications were disappearing. Chris believed there was another story to tell—one that focused on the good happening in local communities.

Her idea was simple: create a publication that highlights great places, inspiring people, and local businesses that make communities special.

“Advertiser tips are still part of the positive energy of the book,” says Alexander. “It fuels my heart each time I read them.”

Those short tips from local businesses quickly became one of the book’s signature features, giving readers helpful advice and new ideas to try.

Growing With the Community

Since Alexander retired as publisher in 2016, The Buzz Book has continued to grow.

Distribution has expanded, and the publication now connects with readers through its website and social media channels as well as through print.

Editor Paula Adam says staying relevant is the key to keeping print strong.

“Some say print media is dead,” Adam says. “I would disagree. Print works when the content matters to readers. We’re always looking for new ways to keep the book fresh and meaningful.”

For the team helping shape the future of the publication, the goal is to build on the strong foundation created over the past two decades.

“Twenty years says a lot about the loyalty of our readers and the support of local businesses,” says Leasa Hite, business development partner for The Buzz Book. “We want to keep growing while staying true to what makes the book special—celebrating the people, places, and experiences that bring local communities to life.”

What Readers Will Find Inside

The refreshed 64-page format still includes the mix of content readers enjoy:

  • Stories written by local freelance writers
  • Fresh takes on Midwest recipes
  • Seasonal activities and things to do
  • Tips for entertaining and gathering with friends
  • Health and wellness insights
  • Helpful tips from advertising partners
  • A trusted community calendar of events

“At its heart, The Buzz Book is about discovery,” Hite says. “We want readers to find something new every time they open the book.”

A Tradition Readers Love

One of the best moments for the team is distribution week. Fresh copies arrive, boxes are opened, and readers start flipping through the pages right away.

“When we see people excited to grab the newest issue, it reminds us why we do this,” Adam says. “It’s a joy to celebrate the abundance of our communities and keep this tradition going.”
